Rickword, John Edgell
(1898-1982)
   Born in Colchester, Essex, he joined the Artists Rifles in 1916 and saw active service as an officer with the Royal Berkshire Regiment. He was invalided out of the army after the Armistice and was awarded the Military Cross. He went up to Pembroke College, Oxford in 1919, but stayed only four terms, reading French literature, and leaving when he married. He became a reviewer for the Times Literary Supplement and the New Statesman. He founded the literary review Calendar of Modern Letters, which ran from 1925 to 1927. In the 1930s he joined the Communist Party of Great Britain and was politically active during the period of the Spanish Civil War. From 1944 to 1947 he was the editor of the Communist review Our Time. Some of his poetry publications: Behind the Eyes, 1921. Rimbaud: The Boy and the Poet, 1924. Invocation to Angels, 1928.
